A community in Maubara have received immediate benefits from the renovation of the Lisadila village Health Clinic. The renovations have included adding a new 5 x 10m2 room and purchasing health related equipment such as patient beds and chairs as well as desks for the clinic health workers.

Francisco Xavier dos Santos, a healthcare worker and nurse who works in Lisadila village, feels happy because with these facilities they can concentrate their work at the clinic. Before the renovations, in order to assist a pregnant woman they had to go to the patient’s house, even when it was very far away.

“Before this, the health clinic didn’t have the facilities to assist with the birth of a child. We had to go to the patient’s house to look after them, particularly pregnant women. But now pregnant women can give birth at the clinic because we have the facilities for this”, said Francisco Xavier dos Santos, a nurse in Lisadila village.

As a community leader, Ancelmo Fernandes really appreciates the PNDS program because this program has provided real benefits for his community as well as communities in neighboring villages.

“In the past this clinic only had tables and cupboards, there were no chairs or other facilities for patients. Through the PNDS program the community decided together to build a new room and buy some equipment for patients”, said Ancelmo Fernandes, the Head of Lissadila Village, Maubara Administrative Post.

Since the Health Clinic renovations were completed last June approximately six women have given birth there. As well as this, more than 25 people receive healthcare treatment there each day.

Community members who access the health services at this clinic are not only from Lisadila village. People from communities in neighboring villages such as Guisu village, Leotela village in the Liquica Administrative Post, and Asulau village in the Hatolia Administrative Post also come and receive medical treatment there because this clinic is the central Health Clinic for all the villages in that area.

The funding for the construction of the additional room at the Health Clinic came from the PNDS program. The total amount of funding allocated to this project was $19,234.49. This includes purchasing equipment such as: 4 patient beds, 1 document filing cupboard, 2 work desks, 2 work chairs, 5 chairs for patients, and 4 cloth screens to create private spaces for treatment or consultations. There was also a fence built around the Health Clinic to keep animals out. The fence was built with wire and required a total of 50m x 80m.

Lisadila village is extremely isolated because it is located on the border between Ermera and Bobonaro Municipalities. The PNDS funding allocated to this village totaled $55,000.00 and included two separate funds (operational funds: $6,250.00 and infrastructure funds: $48,750.00).

The funding for infrastructure development, $48,750.00, was allocated to two different projects: the new room and renovation of the Health Clinic, including purchasing new equipment – $19,234.49; and the construction of clean water facilities – $29,510.25.
